I think about the whole mess the entire way back to Wilkes.

Honestly, I would like to go home with Ian. The idea of facing my mother after the way I left today is slightly terrifying, but I’m not a coward. And maybe it’s time I stood up for myself, anyway. The election is only three weeks away. It’s time for me to start looking for a more permanent out than lunch in Guymon. I need a real job or apartment. I need a plan.

As we hit Main Street, Ian slows the truck to a crawl.

“Where’s your car?” he asks.

“Oh, Momma took the keys as part of my punishment.”

I say it as though the situation is totally normal, even though I realize how abnormal it is as I’m speaking.

It’s not normal that I moved back to Wilkes after graduation to work on my brother’s election for what amounts to room and board and plain sweet potatoes. It’s not normal that my mother takes my car keys when she’s mad at me. It’s not normal that I don’t have a life and money at twenty-three years old. I have no credit history, no real power, and nothing of my own.

It takes me a minute to register that we’ve stopped moving.

Ian is staring at me the way he does just before he divulges an ugly truth, and a little red compact car blares its horn as it whips around us.

My cheeks heat, and I try to head off his anger. “Could you just take me home instead?”

Ian’s nostrils flare. “Sure, I’ll take you to your house. Long enough for you to pack a bag.”

I laugh. “Ian.”

He grips the steering wheel. “Do I look like I’m playin’?”

“Well, that’s sweet of you, but I can’t just leave.”

“Why not?”

“Because,” I squeal. “I have responsibilities.”

“Forget the bag. I’ll take you to the store and get you whatever you need. I’ll even buy you a pretty purple toothbrush.”

“And where am I supposed to stay?”

“You can stay with me. I’ve got a spare room. You can use it as long as you want. I can keep my hands to myself.”

My smile is skeptical at best. “You can’t, and I wouldn’t want you to. Besides, folks talk.”

“Let ’em. Baby, I don’t understand your loyalty to those people.”

Those people.

“I’m one of those people.”

“No, you ain’t. You’re not like them at all.”

“What if I am and you just don’t want to believe it.” Goodness, I’m tearing up again.

Ian pops my seatbelt and hauls me over beside him. A few more cars pass by, though none of them honk or get ugly even though we’ve blocked the whole lane. He smooths my hair back away from my face and kisses my forehead. “You ain’t. But it might be that the only way to prove that to you is to take you home. Get your seatbelt on.”

I don’t slide back over to my side but stay in the center seat under his arm, which tightens on my shoulders the closer and closer we get to my childhood home.
